Bitumen is the name given to asphalt-like petroleum products that are derived from crude oil. Asphalt is a solidified petroleum product that consists of three different components: bitumen, aggregate and additives.

There are many uses of bitumen around the world today including roadways, waterproofing, roofing, siding and other construction projects. Bituminous coal is a type of fossil fuel containing high levels of carbon and hydrogen, sometimes called black diamonds. Coal is burned in power stations to release its stored chemical energy and generate electricity.
